When I first read this report about the climactic battle in the final Lord of the Rings film from Canada.com, I couldn't help but smirk. Making digital soldiers with artificial intelligence too smart is a definite dystopian future no-no.
Peter Jackson wanted the fight to be so realistic that he asked his programmers to make every soldier fight individually. However, by making each soldier think for himself, for the first two years of production they did nothing but flee the field of battle.

One problem with modern life is that we seem to be sterilising ourselves into a torpor. Everything that society does is to make things safer and easier. But is that necessarily better?
A case in point is shown in this Christian Science Monitor review of David Quammen's
"Monster of God". In it, he shows how the threat of predators has influenced us through the ages.

Following on from a recent discussion over at Savoradin (in a vaguely roundabout way) I remembered a link I meant to post a while back. We have been photographing the solar system for over 40 years now, and this has led to some pretty spectacular images.
Thankfully we can turn to Michael Benson (whose work is highlighted in this Smithsonian Magazine article), who has sorted through thousands of raw photographs looking for the most fascinating alien topographies.

When the question of greatness arises, the prominent debate comes between advocates of the "great person theory" and advocates of the "great events theory".
Whenever articles such as this one from Pravda looks at two such conflicting theories you will nearly always find that their truth nestles comfortably somewhere inbetween. I wonder if this is because of the human need to compromise and compartmentalise?
