QuotesAccept no one's definition of your life, but define yourself.

- Harvey Fierstein

The Tony Award winning actor spoke this as a part of his commencement speech to the Bennington College Class of 1992. The complete quote is:

"Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life, but define yourself."

Admittedly, I feel that this is a stronger quote than my paraphrase but it also has negative (or more accurately defiant) connotations which I feel really need a greater explanation than a simple quote can carry.

It just goes to show how by simply removing a phrase from the context that surrounds it, you can alter the perception of it.

Anyway, in his speech Harvey provides a number of humourous insights (as well as a strong dislike for Dan Quayle!) which are well worth taking a few minutes out of your life to read.
