 SEO Job Titles

Search EnginesWhat with Search Engine Optimisation being somewhat of a niche career, a lot of people within the industry have tried to come up with job titles that encompass what we do.

This is made all the harder by the fact that we don’t all work in the same way.

The first term to appear was the Search Engine Optimiser/Optimizer. Then in the summer of 2001, after that name had been dragged through the mud so many times by scam artists, leading industry pundit Danny Sullivan attempted to change the focus to Search Engine Marketer.

However, a recent thread on WebmasterWorld Forums found that there were numerous other terms that we should consider (in no particular order and certainly not definitive):

  • Webmaster (surprisingly!)
  • Web Editor
  • Web Developer
  • Web Programmer
  • Web Designer
  • Web Analyst
  • Web Site Optimiser/Optimizer
  • Web Content Editor
  • Online Marketer
  • Online Marketing Manager
  • Search Engine Specialist
  • Internet Marketer
  • Internet Business Consultant
  • Internet Marketing Consultant
  • Internet Consultant
  • Visibility Consultant
  • Traffic Developer/Driver
  • Traffic Analyst
  • PPC Consultant
  • Usability Advisor
  • Internet Strategist

This shows the diverse range of jobs that may be done by some within our little industry. Whether it be designing or developing web sites, programming, statistical analysis, development of online cpm or cpc advertising or advising on useability there is almost something for everyone!

Anyway, just food for thought for those of you who think that those who work in SEO are one trick ponies.
